Living in a place where it's perpetually summer, one may think that I spend a lot of time laying around pools drinking my favourite cocktails. I wish! Alas, the high import tax on spirits means that a bottle of vodka can cost upwards of $70 and many bars are getting a bad reputation for serving substandard spirits that cause methanol poisoning. So I had been saving the expensive bottle of Grey Goose vodka and the bottle of champagne that some friends had kindly given me for a special occasion: my 31st birthday party.
Oh, champagne, how I've missed you! Champagne is either extortionately expensive or hard to come by here in Bali, so I was pretty excited to have a bottle of bubbly to crack open on my special day. I'd discovered a few packs of edible flowers at CarreFour the day before and had some fresh strawberries on hand to add to the mix. The bottle just wasn't big enough - sharing it with a few friends may have been my first mistake! Next time? I'm not sharing and I'm upping the game to this Blooming Fizz.
Vodka Berry Crush
I'm a huge fan of frozen berries. They're a bit of a luxury here, but I always make sure to have some stored in the fridge or freezer. They actually last for ages and I can get at least 2 weeks out of a box of frozen blueberries. At $7/box, that's only about 50c a day! I adapted a Martha Stewart recipe and went nuts on the berry front to make up for my lack of blackberries, replacing them with blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. These were perfect.
